The Food and Drug Administration approved a lung cancer medication Wednesday as a new treatment for pancreatic cancer.
Tarceva does not cure pancreatic tumors and helps patients live only a little longer, according to a study of more than 500 patients that led to the drug's approval. But while Tarceva may be only a "small step forward," it also could be a "harbinger of things to come," says Robert Wolff, an associate professor at Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center who was involved in the study. Holly, PhD, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco, researched more than 2,200 San Francisco Bay residents, including 532 pancreatic cancer patients. Those who ate six or more servings of vegetables every day got pancreatic cancer half as often as those who ate less than three servings a day. (WebMD)
