Lyme Disease

Lyme Disease is a vector-born illness that is caused by the bite of deer ticks that are infected with a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. According to the CDC, there were more than 23,000 infections in the United States in 2002. The disease was first recognized in the 1970s in the town of Lyme, Connecticut after a group of children developed a rash followed by juvenile arthritis. People who have been bitten by an infected tick will first notice an expanding rash that often looks like either a bullseye or a solid red area. This rash is referred to as erythema migrans (EMT). It is sometimes accompanied by aches and pains, fever, and fatigue, but sometimes there are no symptoms.
