What is pink eye?

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the conjunctivae. The conjunctivae are the membranes that cover the whites of the eyes and the inside of the eyelids.

The infection may be bacterial, viral, the result of an allergic reaction, or caused by an irritant that gets into the eye. Most cases of pink eye are caused by a virus.

Although pink eye can be annoying and unsightly, it is very common and is not usually something to worry about. Viral pink eye usually clears up on its own in seven to ten days, but a visit to the doctor and treatment may be required for bacterial conjunctivitis. This is why it's a good idea to visit the doctor when you think you have pink eye so the doctor can determine if treatment is necessary. Infants and children with pink eye should always be seen by a doctor.

Both bacterial and viral conjunctivitis are highly contagious. You can catch pink eye from someone by touching them, touching something they touched, sharing towels, or being near them when they cough or sneeze. Pink eye can also be spread from one eye to the other by rubbing the infected eye and then touching the uninfected eye.

To avoid spreading pink eye to others, you should stay home from work or school when you have symptoms.
