Macular degeneration is the number one cause of blindness in those over the age of 55. It results from degeneration of the macula area of the retina which is responsible for central vision that is used for reading, recognizing faces, and detail work. Peripheral vision is usually retained.

There are two forms of the disease - wet macular degeneration and dry macular degeneration. It is not known what causes macular degeneration, though heredity plays a known role in many cases.
