What is dissociative identity disorder?


Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder or MPD, is a psychiatric disorder in which a person switches between at least two personalities or identities.

The American Psychiatric Association renamed the disease from Multiple Personality Disorder to Dissociative Identity Disorder in 1994. There is much controversy over this diagnosis with the psychiatric community splitting into two camps, those who believe it is a naturally occurring disorder and those who feel it is a learned behavior caused by therapy itself.
